Background and Introduction
There has been a marked increase in the number of community radio outlets in the UK over the past few years. Despite this, however, there is still a shortage of affordable, accessible live radio opportunities for freelance, trainee and community broadcasters who want to practise their skills, showcase their talents or discuss topics which concern them.

Modern digital equipment and communications, combined with an open system requiring minimum licensing, mean that the internet can now provide such an opportunity.

London Link Radio was set up as a project to address these needs, creating an online broadcasting opportunity for participants (WRG trainees, freelancers, young people involved in radio projects and community radio participants) who have good programme ideas, who are trying to gain experience in radio production and/or who want to make their voices heard.

The London Link Radio partners for the pilot were Women's Radio Group, Aitchison Media & Development, FlexiSchool Acton and Children and Radio.

Objectives
The overall objectives of the project were to provide accessible, not-for-profit broadcasting opportunities on the internet for members of London Link Radio, and to establish a sustainable model for other groups to use in the future.

Specific objectives were:

  • to build teams of community broadcasters to produce live online broadcasts.

  • to produce and broadcast quality community programming using WRG's webstream provided by the CMA, including both original programming and pre-recorded programmes originally produced by or for other community projects, especially programming which would inform, entertain and educate the listening public.

  • to provide a voice for different sectors, including young people, older people, women and members of marginalised communities, such as refugees, people from Black and ethnic minorities and communities in the process of regeneration.
