Autumn Broadcast 2006 (27th - 29th October)

Welcome to London Link Radio's first Autumn Broadcast - 15 hours of programmes broadcast online from the Desi Radio Training Centre in Southall during the last weekend in October.    There are three main themes across the programmes:  environment, literature and diversity.

Environment Programme with the Desi Radio Eco Team.  
In part one:  tips and dramas on environment topics, in English and Panjabi, plus interviews with Saskia Merriman (Global Action Plan) and Jagdeesh Singh (London 21 sustainability network)
In part two:  interviews with Stuart Pohler (London Borough of Ealing) and John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington.

Including a report from Jenny Tracey on The Bridges Programme, which provides work shadowing opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland.

Including interviews with members of STAR (Student Action for Refugees) and Barbed Wire Britain.

Viva East
Highlights from the first programme of Viva East - the new monthly show on Sound Radio celebrating all things East London.
Presented by Sarah Braithwaite and produced by Rachel Salmon, with Rukshana Baki, Parveen Khan and Sonja D'Cruz.  Highlights include an interview with Hackney photographic artist Tom Hunter and a report on Kaffe Mathews' 'Music for Bodies' installation at the Rich Mix Centre in Bethnal Green.

Environment - A View from India
Indu Ramesh interviews the filmmaker and environmentalist, Suresh Heblikar, founder of Eco-Watch Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development in Bangalore. (In 4 parts)

Diversity magazine, with Cristina Pittelli
Including Somali songs and stories from Fatuma Mohamed Shire, former reporter and journalist with Radio Mogadishu, plus an interview with the Romanian Acting Ambassador in London.

Diversity and the media - magazine programme, with Deniece Riley, Micol Carmignani and Cathy Aitchison.  Including a report on BECTU's Move On Up event for black and minority ethnic radio workers.  
Plus:
Josette Koukoui interviews Bisi Akiwumi-Jones, director of VOIS (Voicing Our Issues and Struggles), an organisation which works with teenagers and young people.

Literature  
Two stories by the late Debbie Birse:  "Howard's Women" and "Mother Love", read by Vivien Ereira and Peri Batliwala.  Sadly, Debbie died of cancer in 2005.  A book of her writing will shortly be published by Pen Press, and proceeds donated to the charity CANCERactive. Click here to visit the CANCERactive website where you can donate online (or by phone) if you wish.
Plus:  poetry from the writer and photographer Angela Inglis.

Literature WILDE Network
Women Into Literature, Development and Enterprise
With Rasheda Ashanti Malcolm and members of the Just Write black women writers' group, Hammersmith: Kim, Eury and Najjah, and the poet Culture.  Readings and performances of their own work, plus: information on events from WILDE, including WiSPA, Inverting the Triangle and Sensually Yours.

Environment Questions 
Environment topics discussed by a panel of experts:  Leo Hickman (author and columnist for The Guardian), Saleem Oppal (Black Environment Network), Saskia Merriman (Global Action Plan) and Amanda Maclean (Camley Street Natural Park). Chaired by Cathy Aitchison.  Recorded at Camley Street Natural Park.

Refugees and the Media
With Micol Carmignani and Jenny Tracey
Looking at media coverage of refugees and asylum seekers in the British media and at various initiatives and organisations which campaign for a just and fair portrayal of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers. Plus: personal stories and opinions of those people whose voices are rarely heard in mainstream media and examples of training and employment opportunities for refugees and asylum-seekers in London. Interviews include representatives from the Exiled Journalists Network, the Press Complaints Commission and the Migrant Resource Centre.

Environment Snapshots
Sounds, thoughts and writings on the environment.  Including "Beach Life" by Kate Rudman, a feature exploring the pleasures of fossil hunting on Dorset's jurassic coast, and "Dawn chorus in Somers Town" recorded by Angela Inglis and Cathy Aitchison.
Plus:  soundscapes recorded by members of the Women's Radio Group Fast Forward training course.
